{"id":4963,"date":"2021-12-18T14:04:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-18T14:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaofthings.co.uk\/?p=4963"},"modified":"2021-12-18T14:04:51","modified_gmt":"2021-12-18T14:04:51","slug":"the-met-safe-in-the-hands-of-the-high-ups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaofthings.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/18\/the-met-safe-in-the-hands-of-the-high-ups\/","title":{"rendered":"The Met: safe in the hands of the high-ups?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>THE METROPOLITAN POLICE have today announced the latest step they are taking in their plan to rebuild public trust in the capital\u2019s law enforcement body \u2013 which was shattered after the murder of Sarah Everard in March this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was not just that Sarah Everard was murdered by a police officer who used his official identity to lure her to her death.\u00a0 It is also that signs that he was a potentially dangerous man were not noticed or not acted on by his colleagues, revealing serious flaws in the culture of the Metropolitan Police. Dame Elish Angiolini will be leading an independent review to address the issues raised in this case at an as yet unspecified point in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/met-police-helmet-small.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26108\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/met-police-helmet-small.jpg?resize=200%2C202&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a>The Metropolitan Police did not wait for the inquiry. In October they launched a plan: \u201cRebuilding Trust\u201d. It listed twelve \u201cimmediate\u201d priorities which the service would take to \u201craise standards and improve our culture\u201d. Initial work on these priorities has already led to the Metropolitan Police finding additional areas to investigate \u2013 including how it listens to the public\u2019s concerns. This week the Met added another point: a commitment to spend six months looking at how it can \u201cstrengthen key processes including initial officer recruitment\u201d in order to \u201cimprove the organisation\u2019s culture and standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While all this reviewing and delivering goes on, the Metropolitan Police is also preparing for Baroness Casey of Blackstock to undertake an \u201cindependent and far-reaching review\u201d of Metropolitan Police standards and culture, which is expected to start in the new year. Commander Rachel Williams is leading the Metropolitan Police programme to rebuild Trust.\u00a0 She welcomed the Rebuilding Trust Plan and said, \u201cWe recognise the challenge we face in instilling confidence back in those we serve, but it is critical and right that all Londoners can trust our officers, staff and volunteers whenever they encounter them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Who has to change?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThere is no reason to doubt that Commander Williams is completely sincere in her desire to drive change in the Metropolitan Police.\u00a0 However, she goes on to talk about the Metropolitan Police having \u201cprofessionalism, integrity, courage and compassion\u201d and the task being to \u201croot out those who do not uphold our values, those who betray the public\u2026\u201d It seems she is taking a \u201clet\u2019s find the rotten apples\u201d approach rather than having an open mind over why officers tolerate misogyny in their colleagues \u2013 in cases such as the murder of Sarah Everard and subsequent ones such as circulating photos of murdered women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One could also say that the phrase \u201cinstilling confidence back in those we serve\u201d is strange. It sounds as if it is the public whose attitude has to change: we have to be won over to the belief that most officers are decent chaps (actually, many of them are).\u00a0 Commander Williams could have said that the Metropolitan Police has \u201cmany changes to make before the public can have confidence in us\u201d. That may have more closely reflected where the onus of change lies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Can we trust the high ups?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe whole approach to the need to change seems to be prolonged and left to the Great and the Good at the top of the societal food chain.\u00a0 Inquire, review, inquire\u2026 as months pass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was an earlier time when public trust in the Metropolitan Police was low: the late 1970s and early 1980s. Back then it was probably a bit more about racism than sexism. \u00a0The Leader of the Greater London Council (one Ken Livingstone) set up a police committee, where GLA members and members of the public sat down together to scrutinise what the police were up to. The model was repeated across London Councils.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Police Committees did not rush to find judges and members of the House of Lords to investigate at length.\u00a0 If the public\u2019s trust was broken, the public could get together and act together under the umbrella of the police committee \u2013 pointing to the problems and throwing in solutions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/met-police-crowd-backs-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26106\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/met-police-crowd-backs-1.jpg?resize=500%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sometimes you don\u2019t need people who have attained high public office to point out what the woman in the street would describe as \u201crather obvious\u201d (though she would probably use more robust terms). The people in the street are the experts, and we can suggest solutions ourselves.
