It called for urgent action to be taken across the borough \u2013 including the speedy development of a strategy to bring more money into the borough to tackle knife crime and drug trafficking. At the time of the Council meeting, the petition had been signed by over 23,000 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cllr Ahmed\u2019s motion also called on the Executive Mayor to do more to support young people and stop them being tempted into a dead end of drug dealing and related crime. Critics of the Executive Mayor\u2019s strategy of centralising youth centres in eight hubs in the borough and a small number of additional satellite venues is not enough to reach out to local young people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Labour complacent<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26055\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/KC-motion-biggs.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26055\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26055\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/KC-motion-biggs.jpg?resize=125%2C163&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Labour&#8217;s Executive Mayor, John Biggs &#8211; accused of being complacent in the face of the knife crime emergency<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sadly, complacent Labour Councillors amended Cllr Ahmed\u2019s motion, turning it into a eulogy for the token services Labour was already delivering before the recent spike in deaths and serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI am still pleased that this motion was debated, because it raised an issue which Labour did not want to put on the meeting\u2019s agenda,\u201d said Cllr Ahmed.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sad that Labour Councillors put a series of line-by-line amendments which changed the meaning of the motion and crossed out most of the action it called for.\u00a0 That is a most unusual procedure.\u00a0 In most Councils, if Councillors disagree with a motion, they are advised to vote against it.\u00a0 Amendments which change the meaning and intent of a motion are usually ruled out of order.\u00a0 In fact, they are even ruled \u2018out of order\u2019 in the Labour Party itself!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe opposition parties are allowed, in turn, to have one motion debated at each Council meeting. By amending the motion in this unusual way, Labour Councillors avoided having to be seen voting against all the positive steps it called for. They took over the motion \u2013 in effect giving themselves two motions and refusing to listen to the opposition or the people.
