It\u2019s got residents fuming \u2013 and the Island Network is trying to get the problem sorted out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week\u2019s failure to collect rubbish is not the first one on the Isle of Dogs, where the system has been breaking down on and off this year. The problem is repeated throughout the borough, where residents are finding temporary pauses in collections of household waste and recycling are seeing their streets covered with overflowing bins. It\u2019s not only homes that are affected: schools across Tower Hamlets have also been plagued by missed collections leading to rubbish building up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collection service does seem to have improved since Tower Hamlets Council decided not to renew its contract with private company Veolia and took the refuse service back in-house \u2013 but then again, it could hardly have got much worse. Nonetheless, it is disappointing to see that the service is still under-performing. Refuse standing on housing estates encourages vermin such as rats and urban foxes into the area \u2013 hazards which local residents could do without.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25822\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Maium-rubbish-180821-6.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25822\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25822\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eastlondonnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Maium-rubbish-180821-6.jpeg?resize=500%2C267&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A row of overflowing recycling bins in Byng Street, E14<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Residents living on social housing estates face confusion about who is causing the problem. It seems to be the case that their social landlords are responsible for removing household waste and recycling \u2013 but the landlords generally buy into the service offered by Tower Hamlets Council. Should residents report missed collections to their landlord or to the Council?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maium Miah Talukdar, Chair of the Island Network, has raised the matter with the Council \u2013 pointing out that residents are paying their Council Tax for an inadequate service. \u201cRemoving rubbish should be easy enough,\u201d said Maium. \u201cIt\u2019s a standard part of a landlord\u2019s role.
